Out of Place
Backs of lorries turn respectable;
a madness begins in queues.
Automatic weapons look coy
in the arms of strangers.
The opposite is true. The opposite
to what you have always known –
no streetnames, no burials,
and only the clothes you stand up in.
Houses are pocked and eaten.
A woman in a headscarf returns
with flowers, and she is bitter,
bitter as small grapefruit.
You salvage what you can
from the weak and dying,
but you are still marginalia,
errata, part of the problem.
It first hit you on a country road:
the woods turned to camouflage,
and lovers were on the run from
sweethearts combing the long grass.
