I live near the place with smooth, still honey
it's always Spring here
I sing and cook
bare and brown
or in my purple dress
In the day there are birds
with so many different songs, I can't choose
And at night, the brass shimmering of goat bells
leads me into sleep
Maybe tomorrow (with my shoes in my hand)
I'll go down the road with the purple rock
and fig tree at dusk
to find the beekeeper's garden, dripping
with milk and humming
Shazea Quraishi came to London via Karachi, Toronto and Madrid. Her poems have been published in Magma, Fabric and an anthology of women's writing.
