The Day We Left New York
rain, dark cloud ahead,
temperature dropping fast
cardigan zipped
jacket wrapped
around me – through Queens –
signs, like the movies
black Lincoln, black back
of driver’s head
you asleep beside me
turn round again
yellow sky, skyscrapers
I’m ticking boxes in my head
done that and it was marvellous
was a disappointment
was not what I wanted
was everything I hoped for
a cold day, dark streaked skies
you asleep beside me
