we glide past bicycles and half-seen faces.
Well cushioned and cocooned, we hear no sound
through windows proofed against surprises.
A civic banquet. Wired-up sucking pig,
brought in red-eyed, glares at the banqueters.
We drink mao tai to take away
the taste of counterfeit and platitude.
At breakfast, marmalade.
Behind plate glass we watch
the swollen current of the local stream
enfolding bilge and pig-like carcasses.
