Nearly Beached
A mermaid with a bad back
and shells on her coccyx
carefully swims in the bay
while I lie in a hot bath,
grounded in salt
You are everywhere:
on a cassette, whispering
subliminal messages to eat less;
in an advertisement, washing dishes;
on a refrigerator magnet
showing off a pearl.
But what do you eat?
Your borrowed portrait hangs on a wall
at the Royal Academy; the electric lights
from a blue arcade shadow
the roundness of your breasts
lounging on sky black velvet;
your fin at rest on slab steps
in front of the casino, now closed.
The sprain spreads out like a fan.
Linda Yeaton was born in Maine, USA and now lives in Hampstead. She has had her poetry published in magazines and is currently completing a novel, SARI. A collection of her poetry will be published by The Anne Miniver Press this year.
