Farewell
after Rainer Maria Rilke
How I have felt it, that we call farewell.
How I remember it: a dark unwavering
cruel something that shows up once again
the thing that’s beauty-bound, displayed and torn.
I was without defence to contemplate
that, which though calling to me, let me go,
was left behind as if it could contain
all women yet so small and white and nothing new.
Some waving though no longer meant for me,
a silent waving on and on yet hardly
clarified: perhaps it was a plum-tree
abandoned by a cuckoo hastily.
