Meander
In the honey spilled summer,
down where Germany Beck ran
the gauntlet of reeds and bracken
down where the unloved ground
elder flourished the thickest
that crooked girl, with her
crooked hips took you in and made
the sun spilled summer churn
heat, and if to have that
moment again, if to have
the swarm of insect bites
beads of sweat and
the smell of young women
and weight of swollen breast,
if to chance upon that past
again, I would squander,
squander all again,
in quick spilled
summer, crippled
with regret, letting
the meander of a brook
hirple the slack ground
of out-paced youth,
wading its narrow bed
to where the river
moves in ox-bow breasts
against sedged flags
wilting in the haze
of the years’ heavy
flowing.
