Words for Judas
Take back the thirty pieces. Let me sit
Again and talk and eat. Didn’t you choose
Me out? Friend, master, once again permit
My little trust. Won’t you untie the noose
For this twelfth one and fit
Me with the others but persuade my pride
A different way? God, you were glad enough
To let me play my part. I watched you ride
As King. Change me — there’s time — not as kings love
But where you too could hide
In dread I own, you touched. O tame despair
And take the rope. How hooded are the trees!
Father and friend, make miracles from fear.
I tell you I am falling on my knees
Because I’ve sent you where
I can’t uncrucify you. In your plan
I fit. O unfit me, call out my name,
Make me your closest. Son of God and Man,
Wither the tree where I must hang my shame,
Show me where I began.
