This City is the navel of the world. Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo would have no other. We walk like the blind feeling our way by sense and touch. You place your hands on the hewn stone. Massive rocks carefully wrought close to the line of the junction. Behind these slabs royal couples lie in state: the men on the right; their queens on the left. Bodies throned on chairs of gold. Heads bowed down forever. Their chasquis test-drove the business of government at 150 miles. Something to do with maths, you say, the science of magnitude and number. Let us build this poem into a small garrison - a unit of 10 or 12 - preserving its lines in the finest of resins against our later years. Let us feel our way into the mind of our script, shaping the course of our constant vision, if not with our eyes, with the joining of hands, to the last of our generation.
