Regression
In the night I have sold our house
and repurchased the one we owned
thirty-fi ve years ago, semi-detached
smaller, less well sited
and this mistake cannot be reversed,
is part of an inexorable process
carrying me back against my will,
like the science I keep explaining
over and over again
to no one in particular
who isn’t listening,
or the way I keep going to college
to study for the degree I already have
while the other students
get younger and younger
and I more detached, an observer
who might fail his exams for lack of work
or because he is
still at school.
