Vitalis and me cut down
the sycamore tree
that was threatening
our foundations.
He told me that in Kenya
teaching is a noble profession
and that in Russia,
where he is studying
and met his wife Tanya,
cats are considered sacred.
Here: draped on the wall,
asleep in shade
under the wild dog rose,
or lost under next door’s
Sargasso expanse
of rolling bindweed,
cats sanctify the garden,
and our tree cutting
has a place cut in memory.
