The Unknown Soldier
Almost every night he’s on my screen,
Most times he is in a different place
And usually he looks about sixteen.
Sometimes he is smiling, looking keen,
Sometimes there is terror on his face:
Almost every night he’s on my screen.
The weapons that he carries are obscene,
Designed to annihilate, to leave no trace:
And usually he looks about sixteen.
Once or twice I’ve seen him when he’s been
Wounded and his blood has spread like lace:
Almost every night he’s on my screen.
No doubt each cause he battles for is seen
As right, though he could rarely state the case,
And usually he looks about sixteen.
He bears our arms, yours and mine I mean,
Regardless of our tribe or creed or race:
Almost every night he’s on my screen
And usually he looks about sixteen.
