The Shipping Forecast
The shipping forecast lasts forever,
one slow, controlled orgasm of elements
sung out to sea-slapped sailors.
Our minds –
The wash,
hemmed in by sand bars,
flat and grey;
a faint jet-engine whine, swimming
across a water-logged sun of a sky.
It is worst on calm nights,
the waves invade the hearing,
shuffle up deserted streets and
cat-lick at the door, with
hopes of matchbox mice
to sink between their claws.
Sometimes the moon peers out
between thighs of clouds,
lighting up hills and church-tops alike
before the morning star staggers into the east,
ready to bear in a reluctant day,
bedded against a dirty splutter of rouge.
