The Shades
On the pillow, alive, his breathing Head.
Outside, the whispering, waiting Dead.
On the journey to Bone, he is half gone.
And their numbers have grown.
A breath. A blink. Grain by grain
time sculls in the burning brain.
It is slow. It is long and slow and late.
They cluster. They wait.
Helena Nelson works in further education in Fife. Her first full collection will be published by Rialto in October 2002.
