Circular Route
Tarmac slithers round
our urban lives.
A silver car sleeks
to pause at the lights.
Today they are red.
The car is halted.
The driver taps his fi ngers:
amber, green, the engine
purrs a tongue lick.
If he turns right
he will enter the park:
swings, playgrounds, slides,
a climbing frame
reaching vertiginous heights.
Left, and it’s urban sprawl:
sharp corners, no entry,
roundabouts, no parking,
instructions, choices.
Somewhere lie open fields,
buttercups, streams, woods,
reeds brushing a river bank.
The silver car sings.
He likes to drive on the ring road,
to skirt the conurbation,
to hover between idyll
and fiery reality.
Next week he may go beyond,
course along the lanes,
fi nd the hidden dips:
quicksilver.
