Michael Henry
A Cold Coming
An old man stumbles into Boots Café,
behind him three shopping-bags bump
as on an invisible sleigh.
Face crackled with cold,
he blinks in the artificial moonlight,
then drags himself to a table:
a heap of parka and blue balaclava,
hands in sawn-off mittens pinching out
the wick of a cigarette.
He lumbers up to the counter,
Scott of the Antarctic, wondering
how many others had been there before.
The fifteen packs of sugar he helps himself to
add an icy smile of sweetness to the tea.
