PLAYED THIS NAVEL a live-
loss too. Giotto and photostats
on the box, gilt-edge,
brown-paper. You
brain-mazed
Sleepbreaker to the moment -
not forgetting the eye-black
triangle in the snow
When you leapt into the ice, a string
snapped open, snapped through
the heart-silt after,
whirred away
coming down - coming up - coming out on top?
By when they ring out
the snow
I’ll over-
take you.

2 DEAD MESSAGE
My mist in the mire, greywake.
A smell of soggy skin,
of straw in the sutures, sodden
and sweetish like gas.
A dull egg-beat
gluggles nape -wards.
Leaving my boots stuck
in the mud, I dive
head -first.

THE GRASS that’s going
to seed mocks on. when you
spit out your eyes
It’ll be summer.

SMOKE-TRAIL-OATH
with a Jobsflute
as halfmast
through all the animal coiffures.

WITH EMPTY GLASSES
In the vicious circle.
The latest
kinds of death
dour enough.
