'Faces swung to their prodigious North/Like compass needles' - Stephen Spender
The North makes double figures against the odds. That’s issues, not subscribers. Our circulation has doubled and continues to grow - though we’re still four thousand five hundred and seventy six off our target figure, so if you need to renew with this one, don’t let us down. We’ve had some interesting feedback on the last issue (see letters page): please keep it up. Dr Diphthong’s problem page, however, has been sadly neglected. Remember, no poetry problem is too embarrassing for our resident medico (though we like to think the shards and seagull epidemic is now under control).
The Wide Skirt, meanwhile, has a special Huddersfield issue coming up, guest edited by Ian McMillan: look out for it!
There is no tactful way of saying this. Buy our bastard books you bastards. Our publishing empire, Smith/Doorstop, now has beautifully (and expensively) produced books at extremely reasonable prices. We also have some of the best writers anywhere. Take a look at least. Our latest title is Liz Cashdan and Julia Casterton’s Troublesome Cattle, a snip at £3.95, and winner of the latest Poetry Business Competition.
