In Memory Of Molly
That night: the glimpse of slender legs
As waning gibbous shone the moon
We walked
We laughed
I admired your long black coat
Sad ashes now adorn a sealed keg
And what once was full of life is dead and gone
You sated my lusty demands
“Same time again?” each tomorrow
Car parks,
We met
You wearing your long back coat
Sex adventures to strange eastern lands
“I thought tonight, my love, we’d try Gomorrah”
When I left her for Strangeways
Molly seemed somehow impassive
I waved
She stared
Still wearing her long black coat
Leaving me to count the dreary days
It may be over but I still had to live
The term passed; I was released
I wandered, aimless; my old streets
One day,
A glimpse:
A tattered, matted black coat
Any older and she’d be deceased
How strange! It was now me following her lead!
I watched the departing car
Her now doomed eyes accusing me
She knew
Yes: knew
Her worn coat seemed like a pall
Away to gentle mercy’s abattoir
Molly, we will always have Battersea
