John Bunyan: Of Grace
of grace abounding
exceeding mercy
a brief account
all that I suffered
seeming ridiculous
to those not knowing
the cogitations, torments
sometimes headlong
broken, scattered
jostled, torn
amid tombs
delight benumbed
the very sinews
cankered, scurvy
bound in chains
seared to the heart
upon a ladder
rope at neck
head in a bag
stopped at the throat
what guilt is
smartingly did feel
had so offended
clogged in spirit
a dry as sticks
with often glimmers
longings and breakings
sometimes pleasing
but no conviction
quick to sink
think: can but die.
when broke upon me
seemed to spangle
'grace of God'
and 'is sufficient'
cling to that
'not cast out'
release and shelter
burden from me
sweetness in it
drops of honey
ease to speak
O now I know
such overflowing
all the goodness
such apprehension
scarcely bear it
so out of measure
even to utter
heart, conceive
