Salmon
Footprints and a trail of surf map the shoreline -
my shadow floats in the waves beside me
breathing salt through hidden gills.
We walk until the sea steals the light
and hoards it in minnows -
f licks of feathers spawned by Icarus.
Later we have salmon for tea
fresh from the pull upstream.
This one looks startled, not expecting
to jump so high from the water.
Its bones swim against the roof of my mouth,
scratching and tickling
my grandfather’s wisdom into being -
A few bones won’t hurt you.
Clouds tear a strip from the skyline,
a ragged sheet of paper with the final words
ripped away.
I cannot remember the last thing he said to me -
my memory is silted with time.
I am trying hard to swallow.
On my lips - the distant taste of the sea.
