Mim Darlington
Mole
Come upon a mole and it seems
like a piece of underground
dusty velvet with hands,
whiskering for a way back —
behind pin-prick eyes flickers a knowing —
all the archaeology of damp earth.
Each night it mines
senses the pulse of worm
wrenches ropes of millipede
sucks pupae juice from its carapace
sees the strata of civilisations
blind to the field’s green
nailed to the fence
a flat pelt with gritted teeth.
Mim Darlington lives near Dartmoor in Devon where she is a member of the Moor Poets collective. She taught English for many years before becoming a freelance writer. She has had many poems published in magazines and anthologies across the UK and Ireland, appears regularly at festivals, and often works collaboratively with other artists. Her first poetry collection, Windfall, is published by Oversteps Books.
