Michael Hatwell
Reaching for Black
Not starlight, but a tiny scattered radiance:
it’s moonset; the whited world has faded. Sky
bends outward into night; the starry pavements,
lucid and cool, forget to wink and smile.
As galaxies disperse in clustered hundreds
and distances grow remoter by the minute,
even the farthest stars are drifting onwards
and space beyond sucks out our space to fill it –
while here, beneath the dwindling specks of light,
there’s only black on black; the birdless nothing
that thrives in hollows of the night, delighting
lovers and thieves and wordlessly denoting –
before old worlds where shaped – that first vast void
where no beast passed, or god, or shivering android.
