Etelka Marcel
Imprisoned in her Triangle Wardrobe
It clung around her neck
with glazed staring eyes -
lifeless.
The nose and claws
looked waxed, a brownish-black -
unreal.
Its body appeared flat
like having been ironed
or pressed.
Two legs, stretched, dangled
helplessly, flopping
breast-high.
A lacquered ornate chain
and clasp had held it hostage
for years.
I longed to stroke,
comfort and hug it -
with love.
I worried: no hindlegs
nor a bushy tail:
crippled.
I wanted to set it free,
rip it off her shoulders
and scream.
On parole only for
weddings or funerals,
friends asked:
“Why are you still wearing
this moth-eaten old fox?”
