Thou Great Redeemer
Cennick came North from Dublin
to preach this muddy acre -
showered with stones and dead dogs.
This field older than the Word -
a burial grove of female organs.
We first had sex here -
and I lied about everything,
the eye, childhood-dead and unforgiving,
saw corruption in the promise.
I lost her in the house
of the single men and women,
an unsung stranger
on the road to Wetteravia
seeking truth and redemption
in the nature of birth.
A great aunt went mad with God -
from the bare cell chanted,
When all things else decay,
and died, having carried for sixty years
a calcified child in her uterus.
