This is no brooding moorland,
Green drumlins ebb here,
Criss-crossed by hedgerows
That tremble with wild life.
The church is urbane despite
Its country setting; the school
Larger than many rural centres.
When storms rage, they’re confined
By the high ground and woods.
But within the people,
There, there it can be said
Wild uncles and obsessive brothers,
Dissatisfied fathers and sisters
Who possess unwavering
Dedication to their fantasies,
All these characters populate
This provincial place. So, too,
Do the stalking Heathcliffs,
Fused from the blood of dark strangers
And wilful daughters of fortune.
