| temple garden the bamboo fence topped with barbed wire birdsong the sounds of snow melting everywhere morning sun the starling’s claw stretches on frosted rooftiles among stone lanterns beyond the paper screen the rustle of leaves camellia tree in every flower the bul-bul’s beak |
temple breakfast the flavour of tofu slips between chopsticks a pair of buntings criss-cross shallow rapids then just the water heian shrine the movement of bronze lanterns in orange silence saiho-ji only the sunlight escapes the growing moss temple pool at dusk reeds and their reflections become one |
