Shoeshine
Religiously, each Saturday
upon his knees, bringing a gleam
like hope, to these toecaps.
He kneels, and cups
his children’s tiny shoes; and polishes
with love and care. Recalls
those childhood Saturdays:
the shouts of mates out in the street
as his tired fingers buffed
the Russian Doll sets
of his sisters shoes, ready
for the unwelcome purgatory
of Sunday School. He comes
at last, to his size tens, and feels again
a steel tipped toecap crack
his tender ribs: wipes away
the tear in the polish – sees
his father staring in his face again.
