Séance: On the Road from Stradone
The windshield wipers say yes, then no.
No discrimination between the answers.
The tires roll – straight and non-committal,
no swerving into S or U. These modern
conveniences are useless. Tonight,
the old fashioned way – hand holding,
candles, gold-rimmed glasses
perched on the nose. When the Polish
translator speaks in garbled Russian,
then French, we all lurch forward
for a mother’s chant, a father’s words.
Sun-starved skin, wind-raked hair. Lapis
lazuli. The Bishop and the Tramp. The damper
pedal’s down on the piano. The strings still hum.
Janice Moore Fuller has published two poetry books: Archeology Is a Destructive Science and Sex Education. Her plays and libretti have been produced in the USA, France and Estonia.
