Seeing life as absurd yet, still believing that it can be done, the young persist in trying to make sense of it…
In lit windows milk-round depressives were up
and about early, on automatic, making tea.
The scowling woman was hurried past; and warm
steam floated out from boiler-shed doors, their steps
foamed with blue wash from tub and mangle. There was
the whistle of the man, mechanical tool in hand, as
he moved along from one known task to the next;
and women in green gardens snap-folded sheets.
In steep winter fields the white and black shanks
of fresian heifers were stained red. The same mud,
when out walking, got worked up the inside of trouser

on holiday. And us young, knowledgeable naifs,
so pretend-definite in the choosing of our careers,
condemned ourselves to single futures…
