There has been a lot of debate about the different frame of mind needed to write haiku - and I agree that a different frame of mind is needed, up to a point. However, I think there is a danger of viewing it as something to be separated from other forms of poetry - a ‘curiosity’, or worse, an ‘outsider’.

I personally choose the form to fit what I am thinking about. For instance, I tend to write in a different way for performance than I do for the page. I also tend to write in a different way for children. But more subtly, the form has to suit the words, mood, tone, subject and visual/sound properties. I regard haiku as one particular form of poetry that I love - there are many others.
