It is good to see Calendar of Rain by K.V. Skene. Every line in this collection has weight and resonance. Spring Green is rich with nature imagery but not sentimentalised: 'Everspitting rain / clumps of grey-mould / gangrene the old bridge / the heart of the dam / collapses / (a snarl of snakes / and snow-melt). In Road Kill she reflects on an accident witnessed: 'the blue lights lick the highway - inch by inch / I skirt the steaming smash-up; scared to look / away...' but concludes '...Here you go, girl, / tight-sealed in tissued steel, awash in rain' / it's stop and go through someone else's pain'. Tightly constructed, conveying the shocking image, this is reminiscent of Auden's Musee des Beaux Art, where the characters witnessing the tragedy must get on with their own lives.
