Angel On The Wall
The bare patch on my bedsit wall's
a symptom of depression - my G.P. told me that.
My ex-girifriend put it bluntly:
"Gone to the dogs," she spat and slammed the door.
A fortnight passed and then I realised she'd left me.
That did depress me; but nothing lasts.
One evening, squinting in the semi-dark,
that bare patch looked just like an angel,
giving comfort on these darker days when things go wrong.
It's company now I'm alone.
I've stopped praying. WE 're much less formal;
chit-chat's more our thing.
Last night I told it, casually,
the landlord's dropping heavy hints about redecoration.
Just like the rest, he doesn't know me;
or the battle I'll put up
to keep my angel on the wall.
