Ferme Thomasset
Over straw and liquid manure
the stable lamp’s leaky light.
On the wall bracket
the moon mortars in,
the heavy ox harness,
the red pine switch,
the leather with deadly studs.
It’s the dim hour
before the five o’clock milking -
the hay’s dry flower
grazes
the sadness of wide brows.
Open the door.
The stable fug mingles
with the milky vapour of stars.
On the mountains
a stillness
pressed out by the feet of dawn.
And on the stones,
trampled,
the white Host of apple blossom.
