Last days of the eagle
Eagle soared within split destiny, damaged stars, the inside
of everlasting doubt.
It was no fun to be here, to be great, to be worshipped like this.
Eagle sometimes wanted to be snail, slug, gnat, lizard-skuttle the
back alleyways of secret sun.
It was no good this kingdom of space and fat eternity like
a clockwork fart.
Eagle sometimes listened for the gongs of silence, whale whisper,
elephant doubt. To be a creature running down a crackway of
solid night.
Sometimes he tried to shake the sun out of his body, to rot
between the winds, to let rain souse his dazzle.
To be a fat woman with the men all dead and a weasel in the womb.
Days of coming spring and the old wound like glass apes. The song
sore as a salted wound. Chipped off harmony. The banana skin of birth.
Eagle gathered the ghost of glory, heard the people scream, applaud
headed for mountains: became a hermit: turned into a claw.
