The phosphorecent sea forms beads between the trees. Through the big eyes of the lemurs hooked in the topmost branches the souls of our ancestors look out . . .
A slender bridge goes off like a rocket, overhangs the damaged moon, carries three travellers on its donkey’s back and regains the opposite cliff.
It begins to rain on the gulf. A cloud passes a vast shadow over the heavy, muddy water. A small boat paddles with all its heart . . .
The flash of lightning ! An arborescent fern . . .
Now, between the rocks, a Monster perceives the three travellers on their pack-saddle of shadow. Around the vertical walls of a circular abyss it cautiously parts the carniverous plants. It comes out. Unhurriedly, it places one huge webbed foot on the crest of the cliff, setting off a sliding torrent of shale. And it slithers along the rock wall that has remained in shadow, as a tapping of molten enamel flows from its gold-filled crucible with a round sound that swirls and growls.
