Adapting the calf-shed
October 31
Today, on the eve of All Saints,
I’m planting the year’s last plant
on the day the clocks go back.
My trowel scrunches in, lifts...
How warm and easy the earth is!
We’ll be seeing this little hebe
bloom on, well into winter,
its whispy delicate purple
sparkled with pale dots,
deliciously hard to focus on.
I back against calf-shed windows,
their metal-framed mottled glass,
imagining how, when the glass
has been changed, I’ll watch
all this from my kitchen window.
There will seem a breathy shifting
in the simmer of my pans. And if
the pane steams up, the warmth
of calves could be misting it, still
companionable at my back.
