Plenty
After a whole life digging drains,
one rented room with rattling windows
and a view of passing trains. And if.
in the open-handed Irish navvy way,
he spent everything he ever earned
from doing horsework by the road
in bars up and down the land, little
saving schemes now occupy his mind
like turning off the ancient fridge
in bitter weather, or cutting coupons
from the Sun or Mirror. Not much
to show for seventy years, and yet
the gift of a chicken at Christmas
or a small win at the betting shop
and he’s pressing drumsticks on you,
the price of pints, as though the Horn
of Plenty had been emptied out again
and needed to be shared with friends.
