I long to look

I long to look upon the face
loved above any since I was a lad,
and if she were to grant this grace
never were purer loveliness admired.
But if my hope is lost
of gaining trust,
the virtues I would praise are still as fair.
Summer's joy is round me everywere.
Struggle so long without relent
has left the mark of sorrow on my life.
Often my song was my lament,
and I would dearly set an end to grief.
I would rejoice in turn,
if I might learn,
and it is time, after this long despair.
