in this cold winter's wonderland;
it's silent, still, without a breeze.

the dyke's iced over by the freeze,
and sedge in stiffened splendour stands.

Ice crackles in the tall reedbeds;
a bittern booms his haunting call;
disconsolate ducks crowd the edge.

a merlin's hunting overhead,
wetlands subdued by winter's pall.

Soundless on her small, light feet,
a roe deer stirs within the wood,
head raised; a pause, should she retreat?

she vanishes, graceful and fleet;
the trampled grass shows where she stood.

some noisy widgeon whistle there;
