Suburbs
Blades are all at some premium here.
In anachronistic places, knives are
rigidly presented, picked up edgily,
fingered and held onto, like qualities.
Our hair is smooth, shaved off our necks.
Even shears don’t cut the dramatics.
In kitchens our bored neighbours chop
low priced meat, vegetables too cheap
for their taste. Inches from the TV,
my aunt’s eyes glaze. She fondles cutlery.
Most people float towards a slow death,
safe and calming, their panic sheathed.
But now I look constantly for the slice
through normal air, that meets flesh.
