Painted Mary, in a dress of God’s blue.
Books say they got the folds to fall,
the old Italians, with dabs of ultramarine
mixed with egg. Behind the cool lapis
lies the eggline, the protein seal
that underpins it all. Egg white anchors
even the Aztec gold of the seraphim
in its earthly cellular grip and lock. And itching
under the icefield blues of the temple
is the yolk’s tough hide. Yet the colours shine
unalterable. This leathery old sun
still spills the artists’ headlong light
liquid through the fogged glass of centuries.
My kitchen is a church of gallery postcards.
I tease away a fried egg flounce.
A glue of cold scramble gloves a wet pan.
