Festival Nights
In Salzburg in 1935
I was nineteen and I went to
the Chiemsee Bar
where a girl who might have been twenty
encouraged the customers to drink.
I drank Schokoladenliquor,
sweet and sticky but alcoholic.
You could kiss the girl
and put your fingers round her bodice
(under the bodice was a blouse).
She said to me:
Du hast lange nervose Hander
(she must have been reading
romantic novels about musicians)
but as the night went on
they became less nervous.
Sometimes you could get some fingers
actually inside her blouse.
I remained drunk and
she remained teasing —
though I had terrible hangovers
from that horrible drink.
