Interior
Through autumn sharp with stars,
Away from the clean edge of branch and moon,
Fields' quiet ecstasy,
I am warm in the room,
A vagrant mind patched with comfort,
Seeking a soft bed.
And although owls fall
On currents of the night,
My eyes swim with light.
But in the morning,
I have heard the storm
Receding through my silences,
Caught its hunger;
And I have felt joy
At the moon sliding from the fading dark,
Shimmering up my backbone
So I know that walls dissolve,
That my complacency is thinly stretched
Over the raging waters
And would split if held against the jagged stars.
