Spray-paint on asphalt, nebulous shapes,
each with a label, bookbag, shoe,
except for the very largest,
that which delineates the nearly-final
resting place of some kid who neglected
to look both ways, whose identity will be
in the report of the first officer
on the scene and carelessly related
in the local news for viewers who will
cluck, shake their heads, yet accept
the carnage just as the Aztec or the Inca
must have countenanced their own
cults of human sacrifice.
