A New Ground
We all went out on the field in the blustery wind,
Babs and Jakq and me and Cris and played
a game of dance (not fetch in case you thought –
no, this was something altogether other).
We joined our arms and sang and jumped.
And Babs was barking mad. And Jakq
raced after the ball, but let Babs have it,
the bully, but the Babs ran and rolled
and rubbed herself in shaggy clumps of grass
with ball in mouth till we were sure she must
have swallowed it. But up she sprang
and spat it at my feet. It bounced. We chased it
laughing, then the game began again.
