Making Love
Her lover in his half-waking throes,
threshing his arms against her naked shoulder,
smells like a baby of sleep and food, of piss
and shit and sleep, bringing the woollen
blankets and the dolls, even the worn pink
cot bars of her old nursery to lull her.
But after her babyhood who can explain these things -
she can’t spend a minute more in his arms,
she must hop up, make tea, make coffee,
make toast, make the day like a cake set
to bake in the heavenly white Sears Roebuck
oven she got yesterday. Sweet day, good day.
