Swansong
My swansong is over,
I float down the river,
My body inert
And my proud neck a-quiver.
I sang my song gently
And now evidently
I pass the horizon of time.
My swansong is over,
I showed you my wonder,
And lifeless I drift,
A nostalgic reminder
Of all that was beauty,
My instinctive duty
To sing our God's message sublime.
My swansong is over,
I leave you, remember
This ivory ghost
On the brink of December,
The sunset receding,
Heart no longer bleeding,
My legacy metre and rhyme.
My swansong is over,
And some would entreat me
"White spirit, return,
In your melody greet me!"
Yet I slip away certain,
Entrancing death's curtain
At the height of my power and prime.
My swansong is over,
I float down the river,
My body inert
And my proud neck a-quiver.
I sang my song gently
And now evidently
I pass the horizon of time.
