Moussorgsky's 'Pictures At An Exhibition'
(In my rented bungalow)
Promenade
The bungalow does nothing justice,
all plasterboard and unseasoned pine
creaking in the heat, whistling in the cold.
The pictures will not hang on the walls.
Though they hang in my head, they’re insecure
This self-portrait rather less, than more,
promenading the physiognomy,
with shocking exercises of the face
requiring the looking glass to exist
or reflections of oneself in a loved one’s eyes.
Facial lines describe the frailty of glass,
exchanging irredeemable images
of certain fragile moods, cultivated
near the phone, dancing with your picture,
while someone somewhere dances alone.
