dividing the spoils
she took out the shoe box of dope
rolled everything into joints
put half of them into her purse
& then it was the records

you can have Taj Mahal
& then the animals
I got the male dog & the male cat
she'd had enough of males.
a lot of shit can pile up
in seven years
& it took us a while
to go thru everything
& most of it neither of us
really wanted.
you'll always be ...
she started at the door
yeah, you too
& soon no words would come
& the hassles almost dissolved
in the memory of our music
& then we realized we'd
forgotten the closet
all the poetry books &
little mags.
another time, she said
if I don't leave now
I'll never get out
of here.
& when she was gone I
went to the closet
picked up a little mag
& started reading.
it seems there's a metaphor
here somewhere
love like a little magazine
in the closet
the flame & the mimeo ink
your name on the marquee
a feature attraction.
then it's the closet
orange crates & dust
& who really cares.
